Release on Licence

Offenders sentenced to 12 months or more in prison will be released at the halfway point in their sentence, unless they are considered too dangerous.

For offences committed after 1 February 2015 offenders sentenced to more than one day in prison will be released on licence and subject to a minimum 12 months supervision in the community.

They will stay on licence in the community for the rest of the sentence and will continue any rehabilitative work begun in prison.

This means they must report regularly to London Community Rehabilitation Company or National Probation Service staff and keep to the conditions of their licence, e.g. not approaching a victim, staying out of a particular neighbourhood or observing a curfew.

Offenders who fail to keep to the terms of their licence may be returned to prison.
